The Divine Lorraine restoration is well underway. And with apartments expected to be move-in ready by the end of the year , crews have moved on to the Big Kahuna of the multi-million dollar project: Restoring the grand lobby .

Built in the 1890s as an apartment building for wealthy residents, it was converted to the Divine Lorraine Hotel after the Rev. Major Jealous Divine, known as Father Divine, bought it in 1948.

Divine Lorraine developer Eric Blumenfeld is still hustling to save North Broad. The Divine Lorraine is the center of this vision both geographically and symbolically. The apartment complex is located at Broad and Fairmount, about half the distance of the 1.8 miles between City Hall and Temple.

After four decades in the dark, the iconic neon-red signs that sit atop of the Divine Lorraine Hotel have been lit. On Tuesday night, crowds gathered in the rain for a block party at the foot of the historic building on North Broad to watch the signs light up again for the first time in 40 years.

Father Divine. Father Divine, leader and head of the Divine Peace Mission Movement, acquired the building in 1948 from the Metropolitan Hotel Company, renaming it the Divine Lorraine Hotel.

Today, the Divine Lorraine is recognized as Philadelphia's first integrated hotel. The Divine, located on Philadelphia’s North Broad Street, closed in 1999.
