Hotel Rwanda explores genocide, political corruption, and the repercussions of violence. The film was a co-production between United Artists and Lions Gate Films, and was commercially distributed by United Artists theatrically and by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for home media.

This movie starts out with the promising symbolic scene of the chief protagonist, hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina, as the proud happy owner of cigars worth 10,000 francs a piece. For the sake of clarity, the cigars could be replaced with Belgian Chocolates: big, super sweet, fattening, and supremely addictive.
